Although I’ve always been aerobically fit from many years of long distance running, cycling, backpacking and hiking, I realized that my flexibility had diminished from earlier years. So I started training at Fusion Pilates in 2008 when I was 61 years of age.
In the eight years that I have regularly attended classes, my flexibility and core strength are much improved. The dedicated instructors at Fusion have guided me to positions and twists of my body that I would never have tried on my own! Needless to say, I now feel remarkably fit for someone who is just over a year away from 70 years of age.
I use this renewed flexibility during the day to keep up with my granddaughter and to botanize trees, wildflowers, and other flora in the southern Blue Ridge. At night I spend many hours looking at the heavens above at one of 3 observatories in the area – a serious passion since 1972. I currently serve on the board of trustees for two non-profit organizations in our region – the North Carolina Nature Conservancy and the Astronomy Club of Asheville.
I am a 64 year old woman who started at Fusion Pilates in 2009 when I lived in Asheville full time. I had heard of Pilates and Gyrotonics and was curious to try them, but I really knew nothing about them. I took Gyrokinesis classes with Jennifer, Gyrotonic classes with Anne and Casey, and did individual work with Casey, Anne, Jen and others. They helped me to improve my posture, correct my gait, move in a more intelligent and balanced way, support my scoliosis and osteoporosis, and exercise muscles that were difficultto fire around my arthritic, degenerating joints because of the pain I experienced.
Moving forward several years, it is now 2016 and I live in Boston a portion of the year. I am now preparing for two hip replacement surgeries that will occur consecutively. I have been doing a series of exercises executed on the Cobra machine and given to me by Hilary Cartwright, a talented teacher in New York who developed the routine for herself when she had two hip replacement surgeries fourteen years ago. I explained the situation to Jennifer and she was happy to set up a Skype session with Hilary so that we would all be on the same page when I began my sessions in Asheville for two weeks.
Anne is a dedicated, smart, well-trained and very capable teacher. She is attentive, watching closely to ensure that I was moving properly, isolating and using the correct muscles during the exercises, avoiding compensation. She is always conscious of using the right words and images to help me get back to where I needed to be if I got off track. This is often a process of trial and error and intuition, and Anne was very creative and persistent in helping me to understand and improve. Impressively, after working with me a day or so and getting to know my body, and its strengths and weaknesses, she was able to tweak exercises, add variations, and include new exercises to the routine that helped me reach my goals. She dramatically improved my routine in a very quiet, self-effacing way.
Jennifer the owner of Fusion Pilates is a uniquely talented teacher and gifted communicator. A natural and quiet leader, she sets the pace and tone of intelligent, patient teaching and learning that is the heart and soul of the studio. She continues to inspire her students in Asheville and the students and teachers she comes into contact with around the globe. And Jen is the special ingredient at Fusion Pilates that makes it a place you can’t wait to come back to.
Thank you Jen, thank you Anne, thank you Fusion Pilates. I can’t wait to come back to you soon.

Last April I had my 70th birthday……a bit traumatic, and I am grateful to still be here. The past year has been one of reflection. Throughout this process of “life review,” I realized that for the first 25 years of my life, I neglected to keep my body in good physical shape. I did walk quite a bit, but knew nothing about keeping my core strong and my joints and muscles flexible and toned.
I began to take yoga classes while living in New York City. After a short time I felt strong and balanced, and I loved that feeling.
Everything changed when we moved here from the northeast 14 years ago.
Our daughters got married, and I started to think of being able to get down on the floor to play with future grandchildren. (and being able to get up again!)
I found a Pilates mat class and went 2x per week, for about 7 years. Then I heard about Gyrotonic and the new studio on Coxe Ave. I went in one day and talked to a delightful young woman, who said I could take a Gyrotonic class to see how I liked it. I loved it, and immediately signed up for some private lessons with Jen. When Jen decided that I was ready to be in a group class, I signed up for a series…..I was hooked on how I felt in my mind and body. My core was already stronger from Pilates, and that definitely served me well in my work on the gyro equipment.
Over the years of being a regular client (2x a week) at Fusion Pilates, I have remained flexible and strong, my posture is much better, and my bone density tests have improved……going from good to better. The wonderful instructors, who work with Jen at the studio, (notably Anne and Casey Marie) have taught me how to release painful areas of tension, and how to modify movements to protect vulnerable parts of my body…….mainly my sacrum. Very focused work with Jen has made a difference in my lower back, knees and feet……reducing pain and stiffness that are part of the process of aging. I hope to be in classes at Fusion when I’m 80…..and beyond!! Finding this studio has been one of the gifts of my life in Asheville.
I can’t omit the crown jewel of the front office……Eliza. She has helped me in myriad ways, and always greets me with a “Hello smile” when I come through the front door.
A huge Thank You to all of you ( and you as well, Angelo) at Fusion, who have contributed to my health and well being over the years. I will always be grateful!

Classes: Intermediate/Advanced Reformer classes and Intelligent Bootcamp
Over the years, I have had some lower back and hip issues, my physical therapist suggested that combination of Yoga and Pilates might help me. I have worked with Cindy Dollar at One Center Yoga on and off for several years and Fusion Pilates is in the same building. The key to me being compliant is convenience and my wealth management firm is just up the street. So I inquired about Fusion Pilates and they got great reviews. I started with a few privates with Jennifer and then joined some of the reformer classes, which I absolutely love. With a good base from my Yoga and Pilates Reformer classes, I wanted to add some high intensity workouts to improve my fitness, so last fall I began attending the morning Bootcamp with Ann. It was perfect. I would come, work hard for 30 minutes and then head up the hill to shower and go to work. At least once a week, I would do a “twofer”, Bootcamp followed by a reformer class. What a great way to start the day. Needless to say my physical therapist was right, my back and hip has given me less problems.
My husband, John Hoskins, DDS, and I are both natives of Asheville and like to travel. Our goal is to stay active as long as we can. Last year we cycled from Prague to Budapest. For 2016, our goal is to bike the Douro River Valley in northern Portugal. I even got a mountain bike for Christmas. I love to hike and bike and enjoy all parts of Western North Carolina. All of my work with the great instructors at Fusion is helping me accomplish my personal goals.
`I am 66 year old and moderately active. I take Tae Kwon Do classes 3-4 times a week and walk a couple of miles a day with my four high energy dogs. In 2014, I wrenched my neck in a Tae Kwon Do class while practicing falls. I was in acute pain and was treated by a chiropractor for nine months. I got relief from the immediate piercing pain but continued to experience ongoing, dull, aching discomfort and very limited range of motion. My mobility was greatly compromised. The young woman who referred me to Fusion, one of my Tae Kwon Do instructors, recommended release work. She had several injuries that interfered with her reaching her goals in her sport and told me that release work made a world of difference. I took her advice and began attending release classes at Fusion Pilates on a regular basis. Within a few weeks I began to see improvement in my range of motion. Within a few months the chronic pain subsided substantially. I brought the techniques I learned in class into my home and practiced often. I am so appreciative of the careful instruction at Fusion with its close attention to detail and the therapeutic result. In addition, the staff welcomes you like family and I just love the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the studio. I am currently pain free and planning to take additional Pilates classes. I’ve been able to continue my Tae Kwon Do practice with improved range of motion and perhaps most importantly, my dogs and I are happily chasing up and down the mountains of Asheville.
